Push-Ups are a Great Exercise if you do them Properly
If we were left alone on a deserted island (or gym), we’d still be able to get a great workout. Actually, if we had to pick just two exercises, push-ups would be one of them (we aren’t saying the other just yet; you’ll have to wait for that post) because they work so many muscles, don’t require equipment, and are fairly easy to do.
For those of you hate push-ups, why? Because someone said you had to do long lever (toe) or not at all? Because they’re hard? Because (for you women) you were told you’d look too “manly” in the chest?
If you do them correctly, they are fun, fun, fun! Believe it!
Correct form means:
- Shoulder blades retracted
- Long line from head to knees (or toes)
- Hands wide so there’s a 90 degree angle at the elbows at the bottom of the move
- Hands in a line with the chest (not the shoulders)
So, are you a push-up hater or lover? For more on short vs long lever (knee vs toe) push-ups, take a look at our post with a dedicated video, Push-Ups: Knees to Toes

Love the pups. So funny. I LOVE pushups. Seriously, love them. Ask my classes

Butt-in-air pushups are my all-time favorite! I often threaten my class participants with a foot to their tush if I see it sticking up (never had to do it, thank goodness; guess my threats are scary enough!)

Tamara, one more reason I totally love you and your workouts. Perfect form prevents injury, so I’m all for it (unless they get injured when you stand on their piking butts).

Great video! Alexandra, kudos on the perfect form, even with your post-surgery foot. Kymberly, how did you get roped into being the Glamour “don’t” and showing the wrong way? Your cute dogs cracked me up so i’m assuming that correct push-ups don’t include getting licked in your face by your pets.

Shhhhh, I volunteered Kymberly for the wrong way because I knew the short lever push-ups were one thing I COULD do with the one “decommissioned” foot. Besides, once I saw her dog, I knew I’d be doomed.

When you are on the floor on all 4s your doggie thinks you are in PLAY position and he wants to play… and he thinks you want to as well. So funny!
I love this post… I have a love/hate relationship with pushups… hate DOING them but love what they do FOR me.

Yes, Kymberly’s dog was very happy to “help” with the video. We considered retaping, but figured her dog would just do it again. Besides, we were laughing so hard we thought we’d share!

Hi,
nice video, you explained it really well. Most people find push-ups pretty hard and straining, but they are amazing for our shoulders and back.

Hi Mariella< whenever I go for my mammogram, they always comment about my chest muscle tissue. I am sure it's a compliment!

head up..look forward. They wouldn’t count those in the military as correct!
Wait, you mean they only count them if your head is up? But think of the cervical pressure. Will they at least let you look sideways?

I have such a love/hate relationship with push-ups. They are so good for you but they are hard! OMG love the demonstration of the worm!!

I love pushups.. do them more than any other exercise. Usually, I just push 3 kitchen chairs together and do them elevated on the chairs.. allows for getting really deep and feels great.
By the way, Kymberly.. I absolutely love your blog header. It really caught my attention!

Were I stranded on a deserted island, I’d make barbells out of coconuts and bamboo stalks, and that’s how I’d stay in shape. And I’d have Friday spot me while doing bench presses!
Thank you for this video! I always do it the wrong way and I’m always left feeling uncomfortable so I just give up or do the knee pushups instead.

So basically, if you can fit a big dog under your tummy when you go down for a push-up it’s most likely being done the wrong way? lol that was too cute! I have a love/hate relationship with push-ups. Sometimes I feel strong and some days I just feel weak. I know they’re good for my arms/back so I do them either way
