Honor the Isla Vista Murder Victims

Alexandra Williams, MA

pic of father after Isla Vista shootingThis post was scheduled to be a reminder of our DietBet that is starting. But I live in Santa Barbara and teach at UCSB where the six murdered students attended. I am very sad, and all I can think about is the parents of the victims, Katherine Cooper, Christopher Martinez, Veronika Weiss, George Chen, Weihan Wang, and C.H. (I know his name has been published, but his parents have requested him to only be identified by his initials).

None of them were enrolled in my classes, yet they are all “my” students, just as they are yours. All of us MUST come together to insist on laws that keep weapons such as semi-automatics out of the hands of the mentally ill. No parent should have to go through the pain of being told their child has been randomly murdered.

Please watch the video of Richard Martinez trying to speak through the grief of losing his only child, and promise yourself that you will do something to make your children and my children safer.

If you wish to donate to the UCSB memorial that is being established for the six students, please click here.

And please go hug your children, your parents, your siblings, and all those you love. pic of Miles, Aidan & KarinaThese are my boys and my niece. I want them to outlive me. Go in Peace.

Updated 5/26/2014: Richard Martinez, whose son was killed in the Santa Barbara shootings, said the following:

“Today, I’m going to ask every person I can find to send a postcard to every politician they can think of with three words on it: Not One More.”

I just sent a Not One More postcard to my elected leaders. Join me and send one today. #NotOneMore

Sharing. My friend’s sister is a freshman at UCSB so I know this hits very close to home for a lot of people.

I’m so deeply sorry for this. The tragedy did strike close to home for us too, as our aunts are both professors at UCSB. There definitely need to be tighter rules in place for gun control, if there are to be arms around at all — I understand the “need to bare arms,” but they should be for defending yourself, your loved ones or your status quo, not to play god with the lives of others. Such a shame. My heart goes out to you and the UCSB community.

I can’t even begin to understand what that poor man must be going through. Hell. There’s no other word for that. I am so sorry for this. The fact that we have such piss poor mental health care in this country makes my blood boil. I hold the Reagan Administration personally responsible for gutting what social services our country did have.

And I am sorry for you, too. This must be so horrible to live through. When will it ever stop??
